Overview
Seven nights, six rides and the Atlantic beside you most of the way. This guided São Pedro de Moel to Lisbon bike tour covers the southern half of Portugal's Silver Coast, from a quiet resort in the pine forests to the seaside town of Cascais, finishing with a transfer to Lisbon. You'll arrive in Nazaré from the north, along the clifftops above Praia do Norte, where winter swells stack up into some of the tallest waves ever surfed. Then it's on to Óbidos, by way of the gooey sponge cake of Alfeizerão, to walk through a town gate lined with blue-and-white tiles. The coast turns rugged around Peniche, where a clifftop fortress once held political prisoners and the village of Baleal sits on its own little island. In Ericeira, Portugal's last king sailed into exile from the fishermen's beach in 1910, and the local goose barnacles are a delicacy worth being brave for. The final stretch climbs into the misty hills of Sintra, home to the mysterious Initiation Well of Quinta da Regaleira, before heading out to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and down to Cascais.

Full Itinerary
Arrive in São Pedro de Moel
Make your way to São Pedro de Moel, a little seaside resort tucked into the pine forests of the Silver Coast, where you'll meet your guides for a welcome briefing and bike fitting. Stroll the cobbled lanes lined with old holiday villas, peek into the former home of poet Afonso Lopes Vieira, now a small museum, and head down to the beach to watch the waves roll in. Grilled fish for dinner is practically compulsory.

Meals: None included
Accommodation: Hotel in São Pedro de Moel
Clifftop Arrival in Nazaré
A short ride south through the pines brings you into Nazaré the dramatic way, along the clifftops above Praia do Norte. From the lighthouse on the headland, look down on the beach where winter swells, funnelled by a deep undersea canyon, build into some of the tallest waves ever surfed. Afterwards, visit the tiled Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré on the Sítio, then catch the sunset from the Suberco lookout over the town.
Cycling Distance: 29 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Nazaré
Sponge Cake Stop to Óbidos
Head south past the calm, sheltered bay of São Martinho do Porto, then stop in Alfeizerão for its famous pão-de-ló, a sponge cake baked so it stays gooey in the middle. Fuelled up, it's a short ride through farmland to Óbidos. Enter through the Porta da Vila, its archway lined with 18th-century blue-and-white tiles, and wander the main street, Rua Direita, before climbing the castle walls for the view.
Cycling Distance: 47 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Óbidos
Lagoon to Baleal and Peniche
Ride past the Óbidos Lagoon to Foz do Arelho, where the lagoon slips into the Atlantic, then follow the coast to Baleal, a fishing village on a tiny island linked to the mainland by a strip of sand. Peniche is just beyond. Its clifftop fortress held political prisoners under Portugal's dictatorship and is now a museum of resistance and freedom. This is one of the country's busiest fishing ports, so dinner won't have travelled far.
Cycling Distance: 35 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Peniche
Coastal Ride to Royal Ericeira
The longest day of the tour follows the coast south past Santa Cruz and a string of surf beaches. Ericeira, your stop for the night, has a place in history: in 1910, Portugal's last king, Manuel II, left from its fishermen's beach for exile after the monarchy fell. Today it's a relaxed town of blue-trimmed houses and clifftop cafés. Be brave and try percebes, goose barnacles prised from the rocks and a local delicacy.
Cycling Distance: 68 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Ericeira
Into the Hills of Sintra
Leave the coast and climb into the cool, wooded hills of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of palaces, gardens and turreted estates. With a short ride today, there's time to explore Quinta da Regaleira, where you can spiral down the mysterious Initiation Well into a network of tunnels, or wander the lush gardens of Monserrate Palace. Don't leave town without a queijada, Sintra's little cheese tart.
Cycling Distance: 27 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Sintra
Cabo da Roca to Cascais
Your final ride crosses the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, with a detour to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, where the cliffs drop straight into the Atlantic. From there, roll down the coast towards Cascais and stop at the Boca do Inferno, the Mouth of Hell, a collapsed sea cave where the waves crash and spray on stormy days. Then it's into town for a well-earned celebration.
Cycling Distance: 40 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Cascais
Transfer to Lisbon
After breakfast, it's time to say goodbye to your guides and the bikes. A transfer takes you to Lisbon, ready for your flight home or a few more days in the capital.
