Overview
Wild beaches, cliffs, cork oaks and nobody to set the pace but you. This self-guided Vicentine Coast bike tour takes you from Lisbon to Lagos along Portugal's southwest coast, one of the best-preserved stretches of shoreline in Europe, with your luggage sent ahead each day and your route preloaded on GPS. Start with custard tarts in Belém, then transfer south to the coast near Sines. Ride past the island fort of Pessegueiro to Vila Nova de Milfontes, once raided by pirates, and on to Cabo Sardão, where white storks nest on the sea cliffs, something you'll see almost nowhere else in the world. In the Algarve, Odeceixe's old windmill and Aljezur's sweet potatoes and medronho brandy lead on to the surf beaches of Amado and Bordeira, where boardwalks wind over the dunes. Beyond Sagres, the clifftops of Torre de Aspa are among the highest on the coast, and a food truck near Cape St Vincent sells the self-proclaimed last sausage before America. The finish is Lagos, the port that launched many of Portugal's great voyages of discovery, with Roman ruins at Boca do Rio and a chance to explore the grottoes by boat. Bring your swimmers.
We also offer a guided option for this tour. Please click HERE for available dates.

Belém and Lisbon at Leisure
Arrive in Lisbon and meet the local team for your bike fitting and a run-through of the route and GPS. Then head out to Belém to see the Jerónimos Monastery and the riverside Belém Tower, and queue with everyone else for warm pastéis de Belém, made to a secret recipe since 1837. Back in the centre, rattle up the hills on the old number 28 tram for views from the lookouts.
Cycling Distance: 0 km
Meals: None included
Accommodation: Hotel in Lisbon
Pirate Coast to Milfontes
After a transfer to the coast at Sines, start riding south past Porto Covo to the beach facing Ilha do Pessegueiro, a small island crowned by the ruins of an old fort. Then it's on to Vila Nova de Milfontes, a town long raided by pirates until the São Clemente Fort was built to guard the Mira River mouth in the 1600s. These days, the biggest threat is a lazy afternoon on the river beach.
Cycling Distance: 45 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Vila Nova de Milfontes
Stork Cliffs to Zambujeira
Ride south to Cabo Sardão and its lighthouse, where white storks build their nests on the seacliffs, one of the only places in the world they do so. It's quite a sight in spring. Continue along quiet country roads to Zambujeira do Mar, a small surf village on the clifftops, and spend the night at a farm stay among the fields nearby. Look out for the region's tangy local cheeses at dinner.
Cycling Distance: 35 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Farm stay near Zambujeira do Mar
Odeceixe Windmill to Aljezur
Cross into the Algarve at Odeceixe, a hillside village topped by an old windmill with views down the valley to the sea. Riding on, you'll reach Aljezur, famous for its sweet potatoes, which turn up in everything from bread to desserts. Ask for a taste of medronho, a fiery spirit distilled from the fruit of the strawberry tree that grows wild on the hills here. Sip slowly.
Cycling Distance: 45 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Aljezur
Surf Beaches to Carrapateira
A short day that's mostly about the views. Near Carrapateira, the beaches of Amado and Bordeira are favourites with surfers, and a clifftop trail with wooden boardwalks winds over the dunes for big views up and down the coast. Your stay tonight is in a carefully restored hamlet of stone cottages, where dinner at the village restaurant is a very relaxed affair.
Cycling Distance: 30 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Rural village stay near Carrapateira
Torre de Aspa to Sagres
Ride through Vila do Bispo towards the cliffs of Torre de Aspa, among the highest on the Algarve coast. Out near Cape St Vincent, look for the food truck selling the self-proclaimed last sausage before America, a quirky stop before the edge of Europe. Sagres has a working fishing harbour, so dinner is likely to be something that was swimming that morning.
Cycling Distance: 37 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Sagres
Roman Ruins to Lagos
Head east to Boca do Rio, a quiet beach where the ruins of a Roman fish-salting settlement still lie by the shore, then through the fishing village of Burgau. Lagos is your final stop. It's the port from which navigator Gil Eanes sailed in 1434 to round Cape Bojador, opening the way along the African coast. Celebrate with a boat trip into the sea caves or a swim at Meia Praia.
Cycling Distance: 45 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Lagos
Farewell, Lagos
Your tour ends after breakfast. Linger by the beach, or catch a train or bus towards Faro or Lisbon for your onward journey.
