Overview
For more than a thousand years, pilgrims have made their way to Santiago de Compostela. This guided Camino bike tour follows the Portuguese Coastal Way from Porto to Santiago over eight days, with the Atlantic for company much of the way and a growing collection of stamps in your pilgrim passport.
The Portuguese leg runs north along wooden boardwalks and fishing towns to Vila do Conde, where a replica 16th-century trading ship recalls the Age of Discoveries, and on to Viana do Castelo, crowned by a domed basilica on the hill. At Caminha, the Minho River is all that separates you from Spain.
A boat hop takes you into Galicia, where the coast turns wild and granite-edged. In Baiona, the caravel Pinta brought Europe its first news of the Americas in 1493. Further on, there are oysters in Arcade, a scallop-shaped pilgrims' church in Pontevedra, and the hot springs of Caldas de Reis, where weary pilgrims still soak their feet.
The finish is the Praza do Obradoiro, where pilgrims from around the world gather beneath the cathedral's baroque towers.

Porto, Where the Camino Begins
Arrive in Porto and meet your guides for a welcome briefing and bike fitting. The Portuguese Camino traditionally starts at Porto's hilltop cathedral, where pilgrims collect the first stamp in their 'Credential' , so it's well worth the climb. Afterwards, peek into the gilded Arab Room of the Stock Exchange Palace, or wander down to the river for a glass of port and some people-watching.

Porto to Esposende by the Sea
Follow the coast north out of Porto, past the fish grills of Matosinhos and onto long wooden boardwalks above the dunes. In Vila do Conde, a full-size replica of a 16th-century trading ship sits on the river, a nod to the town's shipbuilding heyday during the Age of Discoveries. Keep an eye out for the yellow arrows and scallop shells marking the Camino before rolling into Esposende, at the mouth of the Cávado River.

Viana do Castelo to Caminha
Today's highlight is Viana do Castelo, a handsome port town once known for building ships bound for Brazil and India. High on the hill above it, the domed Santa Luzia basilica gazes out over the river mouth, and a funicular will save your legs if you fancy the view. Look out for the town's gold filigree jewellery before heading north to Caminha, where the Minho River meets the sea and Spain is just across the water.

Into Spain and on to Baiona
Hop on a boat across the Minho River into Galicia, and remember to wind your watch forward an hour. The coast here turns wilder, with granite headlands and crashing surf on the ride north to Baiona. In 1493 this was where the caravel Pinta sailed in with the first news of Columbus reaching the Americas, and a replica still bobs in the harbour. Tonight's stay is inside the walls of Monterreal, a hilltop fortress overlooking the bay.

Ría de Vigo to Pontevedra
Trace the shores of the Ría de Vigo, one of the long sea inlets that cut into the Galician coast, to the sheltered bay of San Simón. Stop in Arcade, famous for its oysters, then cross the medieval bridge at Pontesampaio, where locals fought off Napoleon's troops in 1809. The hills start to roll as you reach Pontevedra, whose largely car-free old town is home to a pilgrims' church shaped like a scallop shell.
Cycling Distance: 64 km

Vineyards to Caldas de Reis
A shorter ride through woodland, stone villages and vineyards in the heart of Galicia's Albariño wine country. You'll share the path with more walking pilgrims now, so expect plenty of cheery 'Buen Camino!' greetings. Caldas de Reis has been known for its hot springs since Roman times, and there's a public fountain of warm water where pilgrims soak tired feet. With the afternoon to spare, why not join them?

The Final Ride to Santiago
The last stage rolls through Galician countryside to Padrón, where legend says the boat carrying the body of St James came ashore. It's also home to pimientos de Padrón, little green peppers that are mostly mild, with the occasional fiery one. Then it's on to Santiago de Compostela and the Praza do Obradoiro, where the great baroque cathedral welcomes pilgrims from all over the world. Time to collect your Compostela stamp.
