Overview
Your bike, your pace and a week of Atlantic coastline. This self-guided Porto to Óbidos bike tour heads south from the Douro River along Portugal's Green and Silver Coasts, finishing in one of the country's most charming medieval towns, with your luggage sent ahead each day and the route preloaded on GPS.The first days take you past the fishing beach at Aguda, along the Ria de Aveiro, where painted moliceiro boats race in summer, and beneath the Barra lighthouse, the tallest in Portugal. Costa Nova's striped houses, the wooden huts of Praia da Tocha and the headland lookout over Figueira da Foz keep the cameras busy. Further south, you'll ride through the pine forests around Marinha Grande, Portugal's glassmaking capital, to Nazaré, where striped beach tents line the sand and a clifftop chapel marks the spot where legend says a knight was saved from the edge. The finish is Óbidos, a walled town full of bookshops, one of them set inside a church. Along the way there's fresh fish at every turn, soups named after glassmakers and, at the end, a ginjinha or two. Stop for a swim, linger over lunch, or take the long way round. Nobody's waiting for you.
Got more time up your sleeve? The 13-day self-guided version carries on beyond Óbidos tothe surf breaks of Peniche and Ericeira, the hilltop palaces of Sintra and the coast at Cascais, finishing with a transfer to Lisbon.
