Overview
Pick your own pace, start when you like and stop wherever the view demands it. This self-guided São Pedro de Moel to Lisbon bike tour follows Portugal's Silver Coast south from a sleepy resort in the pines to the seaside town of Cascais, with your luggage sent ahead each day and a transfer to Lisbon at the end. Along the way, you'll learn how Nazaré's fishing boats were once hauled up the beach by oxen, browse the fruit market and whimsical ceramics of Caldas da Rainha, and visit the church in Óbidos where a ten-year-old king married his cousin in 1441. South of Peniche, the sculpted cliffs of Cabo Carvoeiro give way to Lourinhã, where dinosaur fossils still turn up in the cliffs, and the farmland and windmills of the Oeste. Then it's into Sintra, the hilltop town Lord Byron called a glorious Eden, before you descend past the wind-blown dunes of Guincho to Cascais. Food-wise, expect fish stew in Nazaré, a local brandy in Lourinhã, a pastry from one of Sintra's oldest bakeries and fresh seafood wherever you stop.
We also offer a guided option for this tour. Click HERE for details.

São Pedro de Moel Welcome
Arrive in São Pedro de Moel and meet the local team for your bike fitting and a run-through of the route and GPS. This small resort sits right where the pine forest meets the sea, so take a walk along the clifftop path, dip your toes in at the main beach, or find a terrace for a coffee and the sound of the surf. A plate of grilled sardines makes a fine first dinner.
Cycling Distance: 0 km
Meals: None included
Accommodation: Hotel in São Pedro de Moel
Pine Roads to Nazaré
Ride south on quiet roads through the pine forest, with glimpses of dunes and the odd empty beach. In Nazaré, wander the narrow lanes of the old fishermen's quarter, where not so long ago the colourful fishing boats were dragged up the sand by teams of oxen. The Dr Joaquim Manso Museum tells the story of those days, and dinner should be caldeirada, a hearty fish stew Nazaré does better than most.
Cycling Distance: 29 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Nazaré
Caldas da Rainha to Óbidos
Ride south through farmland to Caldas da Rainha, a spa town that grew up around a hospital founded by Queen Leonor in the 1480s. Browse the daily fruit market in the main square and look for Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics, famous for plates shaped like cabbage leaves. Óbidos is just down the road. In its Santa Maria Church, ten-year-old King Afonso V married his cousin Isabel in 1441, and paintings by 17th-century artist Josefa de Óbidos still hang inside.
Cycling Distance: 47 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Óbidos
Óbidos to the Cliffs of Peniche
Ride along the quiet shores of the Óbidos Lagoon, popular with kayakers and birdwatchers, and back to the coast at Peniche. Once you've checked in, head out to Cabo Carvoeiro at the tip of the peninsula, where the cliffs are carved into strange shapes and the Nau dos Corvos, or Crows' Ship, a rock stack shaped like a vessel, stands offshore. Back in town, look out for bobbin lace, a craft Peniche's women have practised for centuries.
Cycling Distance: 35 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Peniche
Dinosaur Country to Ericeira
The longest day of the tour heads south through Lourinhã, nicknamed Portugal's dinosaur capital, where fossils still turn up in the crumbling cliffs. The area also makes its own brandy, one of just three demarcated brandy regions in Europe alongside Cognac and Armagnac. Carry on past windmills, farmland and surf beaches like Santa Cruz to Ericeira, a whitewashed fishing town where you can toast a big day with fresh fish by the sea.
Cycling Distance: 68 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Ericeira
Byron's Eden, Sintra
A short but hilly ride takes you inland to Sintra, the town Lord Byron called a 'glorious Eden'. Misty hills hide palaces and old estates among the trees, so choose your own adventure. The Capuchos Convent is a tiny 16th-century monastery lined with cork to keep out the damp, while the old town's lanes are made for wandering. Stop at Piriquita, a pastry shop baking since 1862, for a coffee and something sweet.
Cycling Distance: 27 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Sintra
Peninha and Guincho to Cascais
The last ride crosses the Sintra hills, with the option of a detour to the Peninha sanctuary, one of the highest viewpoints in the range, if your legs are up for it. Then it's down to the coast at Guincho, a wild, windswept beach backed by dunes and popular with kitesurfers. Finish in Cascais, where the Casa das Histórias, a striking red-towered museum dedicated to artist Paula Rego, sits just off the waterfront.

Farewell, Cascais
Enjoy a last breakfast by the sea before your transfer to Lisbon, ready to fly home or spend a few more days in the capital.
