Overview
2027 DATES COMING SOON!
Thirteen days, one long and beautiful coastline, and the Atlantic Ocean for company the whole way. This Porto to Lisbon bike tour follows Portugal's west coast south from the port cellars of the Douro River to the seaside town of Cascais, just outside Lisbon, linking the Green Coast and the Silver Coast.
You'll roll over Porto's double-decker Dom Luís I Bridge, hop on a ferry into Aveiro with its canals and painted moliceiro boats, and pass the candy-striped beach houses of Costa Nova. There are pine forests that smell of resin and salt, beaches so wide that reaching the water counts as a decent walk, and fishing villages where nets are still hauled up the sand by hand.
In Nazaré you can stand on the clifftop above some of the biggest surfable waves on the planet, then swap surf for ramparts in walled Óbidos, a town so pretty it was once given as a royal wedding present. Further south, Peniche and Ericeira are pure surf-town charm, with harbourside tables serving whatever came off the boats that morning.
The final stretch heads inland to Sintra, all fairytale palaces, Moorish castle walls and forested hills, before rolling down through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park to the coast at Cascais, once the seaside escape of Portugal's royal family. Along the way there's port in Porto, sponge cake in Ovar, ginjinha in a chocolate cup and more custard tarts than anyone's counting.
This tour is self-guided, with your route preloaded on GPS and your luggage sent ahead each day.

Welcome to Porto
Your Portuguese adventure starts in Porto, a city stacked up the steep banks of the Douro River. After meeting your guides for a welcome briefing, head out and get your bearings: climb the Clérigos Tower for views over the terracotta rooftops, browse the shelves of the ornate Livraria Lello bookshop, or pull up a chair at a riverside café in the Ribeira. Tomorrow, the coast is calling.

Coastal Boardwalks to Furadouro
Cross the Douro on the iron Dom Luís I Bridge as the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia slip by. Wooden boardwalks and seafront paths lead south past Miramar beach, where a tiny white chapel sits right on the rocks. Stop in Espinho for grilled fish, then roll on to Ovar, where whole streets are clad in colourful tiles. Your stop for the night is Furadouro, a quiet beach village on the edge of a pine forest.
Cycling Distance: 47 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Furadouro
Furadouro to Aveiro, via Ferry
Ride south with the ocean on one side and the vast Ria de Aveiro lagoon on the other, passing colourful fishing boats pulled up at Torreira. At the tip of the peninsula, the São Jacinto dunes are a haven for wading birds, so keep your eyes peeled before boarding the ferry across the lagoon. In Aveiro, take a ride in a moliceiro, the high-prowed boats once used to harvest seaweed, and treat yourself to ovos moles from a local pastry shop.
Cycling Distance: 45 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Aveiro
Costa Nova Stripes to Praia de Mira
A short ride with lots to see. In Ílhavo, the Vista Alegre porcelain factory has been turning out fine tableware since 1824 and has a museum worth a look. Next comes Costa Nova, one of the most photographed spots on the Silver Coast, lined with wooden houses in red, blue and yellow stripes. The afternoon follows quiet lagoon-side paths to Praia de Mira, where fishermen still haul their nets up the sand.
Cycling Distance: 40 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Praia de Mira
Through the Pines to Figueira
Cycle beside the quiet Barrinha de Mira lagoon, then into the national dune forests, planted generations ago to hold back the shifting sand. It's shady, peaceful riding with the odd glimpse of sea between the trees. You'll arrive in Figueira da Foz, a seaside town at the mouth of the Mondego River that has drawn holidaymakers since the1800s, with a casino, a fort and a beach that seems to go on forever.
Cycling Distance: 50 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Figueira da Foz
Figueira to Pedrógão to São Pedro de Moel
A longer day heading south along the coast. At Pedrógão, if the timing's right, you might catch the arte xávega, an age-old fishing method where giant nets are dragged ashore and the catch is sorted right there on the sand. Afterwards, ride into the Pinhal de Leiria, a royal pine forest first planted in the Middle Ages. We finish today's ride in São Pedro de Moel, a small resort with a clifftop lighthouse and cobbled streets running down to the sea.
Cycling Distance: 65 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in São Pedro de Moel
São Pedro de Moel to Nazaré
A short ride brings you to Nazaré early, so there's time to explore. Take the funicular up to the Sítio, the clifftop quarter, for views over the town's sweeping curve of beach. Just around the headland is Praia do Norte, where an undersea canyon creates the monster winter waves that big-wave surfers travel the world to ride. Back in town, look out for fish drying on racks by the beach and local women in traditional layered skirts.
Cycling Distance: 29 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Nazaré
Nazaré to the Walled Town of Óbidos
Ride south past São Martinho do Porto, where the bay is almost a perfect circle, then inland through orchards and vineyards. Óbidos appears on its hilltop, ringed by medieval walls you can walk right around. Inside, whitewashed houses trimmed in blue and yellow line the cobbled lanes, with bougainvillea spilling over doorways. Stop for a ginjinha, the local cherry liqueur, before dinner in a town that feels like a film set.
Cycling Distance: 47 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Óbidos
Óbidos Lagoon to Peniche
Back to the coast today, with a stop at the Óbidos Lagoon, a calm stretch of water separated from the sea by sand dunes. Then on to Peniche, built on a rocky peninsula and a magnet for surfers thanks to the famous Supertubos break. On a clear day you can see the Berlengas Islands about 10 km offshore, home to one of the world's oldest nature reserves.
Cycling Distance: 35 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Peniche
Peniche to Ericeira via Santa Cruz
The longest day of the tour, with some short climbs as the coastline gets more rugged. Pass through Santa Cruz, a beach town popular with surfers and bodyboarders, and arrive in Ericeira, a whitewashed fishing village named Europe's first World Surfing Reserve. The seafood is just as worth the trip, so grab a table near the harbour and order whatever came in that morning.
Cycling Distance: 68 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Ericeira
Ericeira to Sintra's Palaces
Leave the coast for a short ride inland, with a bit of climbing, to Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed town set in forested hills. With fewer kilometres to cover, there's time to explore the colourful Pena Palace, the walls of the Moorish Castle and the Sintra National Palace with its two giant cone-shaped chimneys. Before you go, try a travesseiro, a flaky pastry filled with almond and egg cream.
Cycling Distance: 27 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Sintra
Sintra Hills to the Cascais Coast
Your final ride crosses the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, where forested hills drop down to a wild Atlantic coastline. Finish in Cascais, a former fishing village that became the seaside escape of Portugal's royal family in the late 1800s. Mark the end of the ride with a swim, an ice cream on the waterfront, or both.
Cycling Distance: 40 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Cascais
