Overview
Some of Europe's wildest, least-developed coastline, with a guide to show you the best bits. This guided Vicentine Coast bike tour starts in Lisbon and heads south through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park to Lagos in the Algarve, linking fishing villages, surf beaches and sea cliffs along the way. After a night in Lisbon's lanes and fado houses, a transfer takes you to Sines, the birth placeof explorer Vasco da Gama. From there you'll ride to the river-mouth town of Vila Nova de Milfontes, past the rock pools of Almograve, and on to Zambujeira do Mar, where a whitewashed chapel stands right on the cliff edge. Crossing into the Algarve at Odeceixe, you'll reach Aljezur and its 10th-century Moorish castle, then the clifftop ruins of the Arrifana fortress and a hamlet brought back to life as a rural village stay. At Cape St Vincent, the southwestern tip of Europe, a lighthouse watches over waters that sailors once called the end of the world. The last ride runs past dinosaur footprints at Salema to the old walled town of Lagos and the golden sea stacks of Ponta da Piedade.

Lisbon, Fado and Castle Views
Arrive in Lisbon and meet your guides for a welcome briefing and bike fitting. Spend the afternoon in Alfama, the city's oldest quarter, where washing hangs across steep alleys and São Jorge Castle looks out over the river. As evening falls, find a seat in a small fado house. This soulful music, recognised by UNESCO, is best heard with a glass of wine and the lights down low.

Sines to Vila Nova de Milfontes
A morning transfer takes you south to Sines, the hometown of Vasco da Gama, whose statue stands beside the castle where he's said to have been born. Then it's onto the bikes and down the coast to Porto Covo, a whitewashed village built around a tiny square. Finish in Vila Nova de Milfontes, where the Mira River meets the Atlantic and the beaches are sheltered enough for an afternoon swim.

Almograve to Zambujeira do Mar
Ride south through farmland and coastal heath to Almograve, where low tide reveals a beach full of natural rock pools. Further on, Zambujeira do Mar is a small village perched on the cliffs, with whitewashed houses trimmed in blue and the little chapel of Nossa Senhora do Mar sitting right on the edge. Tonight is a farm stay in the countryside nearby, surrounded by fields and big skies.

Into the Algarve at Odeceixe
Today you cross from the Alentejo into the Algarve at Odeceixe, where the Seixe River curls around a golden beach before reaching the sea. It's a lovely spot for a swim stop. Arrifana to Carrapateira
A shorter ride with plenty of clifftop views. Stop at the Arrifana fortress, built in the 1600s to guard the coast against pirates, now a ruin with one of the best lookouts in the region. Near Carrapateira, the little Museu do Mar e da Terra tells the story of the area's fishermen and farmers.
