Overview
2027 DATES COMING SOON!
Eight days, a string of seaside villages and the Atlantic Ocean for company the whole way. This guided Porto to Óbidos bike tour follows Portugal's Green and Silver Coasts south from the port cellars of the Douro River to one of the country's best-preserved medieval towns. The tour finishes with a 1 hour transfer to Lisbon.
You'll roll over Porto's double-decker Dom Luís I Bridge, hop on a ferry across the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, and pass the candy-striped beach houses of Costa Nova. There are pine forests that smell of resin and salt, beaches so wide that reaching the water counts as a decent walk, and fishing villages where nets are still hauled up the sand by hand.
In Nazaré you can stand on the clifftop above some of the biggest surfable waves on the planet, then ride on to walled Óbidos, a town so pretty it was once given as a royal wedding present. Walk its ramparts, wander cobbled lanes of whitewashed houses, and toast the finish with ginjinha, the local cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup.
Along the way there's port in Porto, sponge cake in Ovar, fish fresh off the boats and more custard tarts than anyone's counting. A short, sweet taste of coastal Portugal for anyone who wants the highlights in a week.
Prefer to set your own pace? This tour is also available self-guided, with your route preloaded on GPS and your luggage sent ahead each day.

Welcome to Porto
Please make your own way to Porto, Portugal's second city, where the tour begins with a welcome and briefing from your guides. Once you're settled, there's time to wander the steep lanes of the Ribeira, admire the blue-and-white azulejo tiles at São Bento station, or find a spot by the Douro with a glass of port. An early night is optional but recommended.

Over the Douro to Furadouro
Roll out through Porto and over the Dom Luís I Bridge into Vila Nova de Gaia, home of the port lodges. Then it's south along the coast, past the little chapel of Senhor da Pedra perched on the rocks at Miramar, to Espinho for a lunch of fresh fish. In Ovar, look out for pão-de-ló, a sponge cake baked here for more than two centuries, before rolling into the beach village of Furadouro.
Cycling Distance: 47 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Furadouro
Furadouro to Praia de Mira
Follow a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic and the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, through fishing villages like Torreira and the birdlife of the São Jacinto Dunes Nature Reserve. A short ferry hop takes you across the lagoon, then it's on past Costa Nova, where the old fishermen's huts are painted in bold stripes and look dressed for a seaside party. Finish in Praia de Mira, a laid-back beach town where boats are still pulled up onto the sand.
Cycling Distance: 65 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Praia de Mira
Pine Forests to Figueira da Foz
Ride past the tucked-away Barrinha Lagoon and into the pine forests that line the dunes, where the scent of the trees mixes with the sea breeze. By afternoon you'll reach Figueira da Foz, nicknamed the Queen of the Silver Coast, where the Mondego River meets the Atlantic and the beach is so wide that getting to the water counts as a decent walk.
Cycling Distance: 55 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Figueira da Foz
Figueira to São Pedro de Moel
Head south to Pedrógão, where the traditional xávega fishing method is still used, with huge nets hauled up the beach. Then it's into the pine forest to São Pedro de Moel, a small seaside town tucked among the trees. If you've got legs left, the 7 km Volta dos Sete loop mixes forest, streams and sea. If not, a bowl of rabbit stew awaits.
Cycling Distance: 65 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in São Pedro de Moel
Nazaré's Giant Waves
A short ride today, leaving plenty of time for Nazaré. Head up to the clifftop fort at Praia do Norte, where a vast underwater canyon funnels Atlantic swell into some of the biggest surfable waves on earth. Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara put it on the map in 2011 with a world-record ride. In winter you might see the big-wave surfers in action; the town beach below is usually far calmer.
Cycling Distance: 29 km
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Nazaré
Nazaré to Medieval Óbidos
Ride past the almost perfectly round, shell-shaped bay at São Martinho do Porto, then through windmills, vineyards and farmland to Óbidos. This walled town was a 13th-century royal wedding present, and it still looks the part. Walk the ramparts, wander cobbled lanes of whitewashed houses and try ginjinha, the local cherry liqueur, served in a little chocolate cup. Eating the cup is encouraged.
