Overview
Set your own pace, stop wherever takes your fancy and let your luggage do the travelling. This self-guided Porto to Coimbra bike tour follows Portugal's Silver Coast south from the Douro River, then heads inland along the Mondego to one of Europe's great university cities. Leaving Porto, you'll pass the fishing village of Afurada and the grand old seaside villas of Granja before reaching Ovar, home to one of Portugal's liveliest carnivals. Then it's down the long sandbar of the Ria de Aveiro, across the lagoon by ferry, and into Aveiro itself, where ribbon-tied bridges cross the canals and the salt pans glow at sunset. Further south, the candy-striped houses of Costa Nova and the fishing beach at Praia de Mira lead you through pine forests to the freshwater lakes of Quiaios and the old fishing quarter of Buarcos, right next door to Figueira da Foz. The final ride follows the Mondego past rice fields and a hilltop castle to Coimbra, where the university's clock tower rises above a tangle of steep lanes, and a garden fountain is said to flow with a heartbroken lover's tears. Along the way there's grilled sardines, sweet ovos moles and a pastry shop in almost every village.
